What Should You Do When You Don’t Feel Competent Enough?
How and why you need to be curious. Think Queerly Podcast — TQ181.
What can you do when you feel like you’re not good enough, not skilled enough, not educated enough, or not capable enough to write that article, publish your book, or create your thing? Take a few, deep breaths and then get curious about why you feel that way.
Being curious isn’t going to solve all your problems. However, being curious is great for your state of mind and for the humility and self-awareness that comes into play — especially when you are truly open-minded and genuinely curious to learn and improve your skillfulness.
Curiosity starts with asking questions.
The more educated someone is about a subject, the easier it is for that person to fall back on what they know instead of being curious. Of course, that’s not always the case. Have you ever noticed that the people who are making the most considerable difference in the world are intensely curious, no matter how book-smart or highly educated they are?
Instead of making excuses, seek to be curious instead.
Sharpening the saw is how you refine your skills to become more effective and efficient at cutting that block of wood. Not knowing something — your ignorance — may allow you to ask the kinds of questions no one else has ever considered. Your path to answering those questions, for yourself and others, may lead to a new or unique way of understanding the issues.
Remain humble, flexible, and open-minded.
These are the qualities of genuine curiosity, even if you are simply curious about why you are feeling insecure or incompetent.
The only path to pure creativity is your own.
You can’t copy someone else’s creativity. Creativity is a universal and natural flow available to each of us which starts with curiosity. The greater your curiosity, humility, and open-mindedness the more easily you will find the answers to the questions you have that will help you bring your ideas to the world.
